Purpose
To show the location
of Independent Power Producer (IPP) project applications
within the Chilliwack River Watershed.
Data source(s)
BC Integrated Land
Management Bureau, BC Hydro, FVRD
Explanation
Run-of-River IPPs divert a portion of
stream via a pipeline through a powerhouse to generate
power. The water is then returned to the original stream
via a tailrace.
While generally considered as ‘green’
power, watershed concerns related to IPP development
includes impacts to stream hydrology, water quality,
stream temperatures, reduced surface flows, gravel and
large woody debris recruitment, new road developments
and back-country access, and visual quality from added
transmission lines.
